One of Junior Achievement's greatest assets is the dedication of its many volunteers; people from all over San Diego County make a lasting, positive impact on our students. At the McGrath Family JA BizTown, the students are in charge. They become "grown-ups" for one day in an interactive life-sized city that reflects San Diego County businesses and architecture.

In The McGrath Family JA BizTown, each of our 21 shops must have at least one volunteer. Each school is required to bring 25 volunteers to help the students the day of their visit. Volunteers serve as "business consultants." They assist with the shop staff meetings, help the students read and understand their job duties for the day, and remind them to stay on task and focus on their business goals.

There are many schools that are unable to recruit enough parent volunteers to support them on their visit to The McGrath Family JA BizTown™. If you are interested in assisting a school for a day or on an "on-call" basis, please contact the BizTown Volunteer team at bt_volunteers@jasandiego.org.

Volunteer Responsibilities:

• You are assigned to one of our exciting BizTown shops.
• You answer questions from students and mentor them on making wise business and personal finance decisions.
• You assist with the students' break schedules and monitor their staff meetings.

Time Commitment: 6 hours total

• 1.5 hour training at The McGrath Family JA BizTown that day, before the school arrives (approximately 7:30 - 9:00 am)
• 4.5 hours at The McGrath Family JA BizTown assisting students in their assigned business (approximately 9:00 am - 1:30 pm)
• We ask that all parents and volunteers make sure they are available for the full day while the students are at The McGrath Family JA BizTown.

BizTown Volunteer Tips

• Pack a lunch
• Come early to get prepared and learn how BizTown works
• Wear comfortable shoes
• Bring a sweater or jacket
• Carpool - parking is limited
• Ask the students questions along the way, the more you engage them in the lesson, the more eager they will be to participate.
• Remember that YOU bring the magic to JA!
