Volunteer Teaching Tips

It can be challenging to get up in front of a classroom of kids, but with a little training and these tips, we have complete confidence in you!

In-Class Volunteer Tips

    Approach

  • HAVE FUN! The kids will follow your lead so enjoy yourself.
  • For games, practice the game at home before explaining it in class. That way, you know all the ins and outs of the game.
  • Organizing

  • Separate your materials into manila file folders marked "Activity 1, Activity 2.etc"
  • If you have something that is perforated, I generally store each part in an envelope or plastic baggie. If you have extras, just glue one to the front of the envelope so that you know what's inside at a glance.
  • It's About You Too

  • Bring something that "shows" the kids who you are - a picture of yourself at their age, your family, your pets or an artifact from your travels, anything!
  • If possible, do a "demo" version of an activity to show the kids (esp. in Kindergarten with the "favorite animal" and in 2nd grade with the donut activity).
  • Bring something from your company with you - if you have any pencils, pens, stickers, key chains, paper or anything else that says your company's logo please consider this a free advertising opportunity!
  • Things To Know

  • If you are getting blank stares - never fear! The teacher can step in and explain things to the student or you can feel free to just move to the next activity.
  • Ask the teacher at the beginning of the class how s/he randomly chooses students, if you use the teacher's techniques you are sure to be successful!
  • Your teacher will ALWAYS be in the room with you.
  • If you want to bring food, just ask the teacher first. There are so many allergies these days and we don't want to leave out any of the students.

If you have a great teaching tip you've used and would like to share, please send us an e-mail with your tip and the grade level you recommend using it for!
