Junior Achievement & Me: Justin Roscoe's Story

My name is Justin Roscoe, and I’m proud to be a Junior Achievement volunteer!

I work at California Bank & Trust here in San Diego, and our bank has been involved with Junior Achievement for several years.

One of the main reasons my company loves to be involved with JA is because when you volunteer or raise money for the organization, you can actually WITNESS the difference that the programs make. They truly shape the future of thousands of children’s lives.

The Beginning
My involvement with JA started when I volunteered at the McGrath Family JA BizTown. I chose JA BizTown for a couple of reasons: 1) I was recommended to it by a JA employee, and 2) I wanted to re-live a childhood fantasy and finally become a radio DJ!

Ever since that moment when I saw how impactful this program was to the children, I only wanted to learn more about Junior Achievement and what else they do for the kids.

Taking Students to Work
I quickly learned that JA BizTown was just one piece of the puzzle. JA also does job shadows, many financial literacy programs for the kids and various fundraisers.

Since my first and second runs at JA BizTown, I’ve grown to get involved a lot more with Junior Achievement.

I’ve volunteered with the JA Job Shadow program. We brought together students from the San Diego high schools to the training department at California Bank & Trust. We presented and spoke to the kids about HR interview tips/tactics, marketing and advertising strategies, finance and budget related matters, and even business lending. It was a unique opportunity for the students to see a variety of different jobs at California Bank & Trust, and that there’s more to banking than just depositing your paycheck and getting cash.

Going for the Win at JA Bowl-A-Thon
Most recently, I was involved in JA’s biggest annual fundraiser JA Bowl-A-Thon. I was the coordinator for California Bank & Trust, rallying my co-workers and associates alike to come together and fundraise for an amazing cause!

This was my second year coordinating JA Bowl-A-Thon for our bank. I'm excited to say that we SURPASSED last year’s totals by nearly 400 percent, raising just under the $10,000 mark.

Because of the fundraising efforts of my outstanding co-workers, we were named as the Top Fundraising Bank and the Comeback Company of the Year for the 2014 JA Bowl-A-Thon! I couldn’t be happier with how my team performed, and the partnership that we’ve formed with JA over the years.

I’m ecstatic that California Bank & Trust chooses to get involved with JA to help make a difference for the children and our future.
