May 23, 2013
Nonprofits invite San Diegans to sail, watch the race, join the afterparty
Junior Achievement of San Diego County and Cortez Racing Association (CRA) will team up for the sailing regatta on San Diego Bay on Saturday, June 8. CRA, a nonprofit organization that promotes sailboat racing, announced Junior Achievement as this year’s charity beneficiary.
The participants of CRA-JA Sailing Regatta will gather at Shelter Island in Point Loma at noon to compete. The nonprofits expect 50 sailboats of different sizes to come out on San Diego Bay to race and participate in Play 4 JA—Junior Achievement’s fundraising campaign. All the proceeds from the event will go to support Junior Achievement’s programs in financial literacy, work readiness and entrepreneurship.
Those interested to race can register at http://www.cortezracing.org. Entry fee is $75. Each boat will receive a one-second per mile adjustment to their rating for each $100 raised for Junior Achievement, with no limit on the adjustment.
Those interested in watching the race, can do so up close on Aolani—the magnificent catamaran—with the host Wendy Gillespie and Captain Steve Mann, a professional sailor and world-class champion racer. During the regatta, Mann will provide commentary and explain the “ins and outs” of racing.
The participants will board at Sheraton Hotel & Marina, Harbor Island, at 12:30 p.m. and return to the dock after the race at approximately 3:30 p.m. Tickets are available $65 per person and include a catered Phil’s BBQ lunch and drinks. Please contact Martha Phillips at 619-300-1961 to reserve a spot.
After a day of racing, the festivities will continue at the after-race party at The Red Sails Inn from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. At the party, the hosts will announce the race results and have a trophy ceremony, silent auction, raffle, live music and plenty of food and spirits.
To support Junior Achievement before the regatta, the nonprofit also invites to shop at West Marine at 1250 Rosecrans Street in Point Loma on Thursday, June 6. West Marine will support Junior Achievement by donating 5 percent of proceeds from that day’s sales from 11 a.m. – 6 p.m. West Marine offers summer items or gear for sailing, fishing, the beach or backyard.
