Junior Achievement Raises Thousands at Its First Sailing Regatta Hosted by Cortez Racing Association

June 13, 2013

Hundreds of community members support Junior Achievement on June 6 and 8

Sailing enthusiasts and community members raised more than $14,000 last week during Junior Achievement’s first fundraising sailing regatta hosted by Cortez Racing Association on June 8 and West Marine Community Day last Thursday. West Marine gdonated 5 percent of June 6 proceeds to the nonprofit as part of the regatta.

On June 8, 25 sailboats of different sizes gathered at Shelter Island in Point Loma to compete as part of Junior Achievement’s Play 4 JA campaign. Even the race spectators gathered to support the nonprofit by watching the race up close on Aolani—a luxurious catamaran—with the host Wendy Gillespie, one of the sponsors of the regatta and a lifelong Junior Achievement supporter. The guests enjoyed Phil’s BBQ lunch and commentary on the race by the professional sailor and world-class champion racer—Captain Steve Mann.

After the race, the sailors, their teams and race spectators gathered at Red Sails Inn for the afterparty featuring prizes such as park tickets from SeaWorld, music from The Blonde Brothers and delicious treats from Red Sails Inn.
