February 04, 2015

San Diego, Cali (Feb. 4, 2015)  -- Junior Achievement of San Diego (#JAofSD)  is partnering with Farmers Insurance and the Century Club of San Diego to raise funds during the “Birdies for Charity” program for the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open at the Torrey Pines Golf Course, February 5-8, 2015 ‪(#‎FIO15) (‪#‎SeeYouAtTorrey).   The program aims to raise hundred of thousands of dollars for 12 organizations throughout San Diego that serve at-risk and underserved youth and military families.  The Birdie for Charity funds will help #JAofSD impact over 53,000 students in K-12 classrooms throughout the 2015-2016 school year.  Junior Achievement’s volunteer-based programs teach kids how to get a job, start a business and how money works.

The program is simple: Individuals or corporations make flat donations or pledge donations for every birdie made by the professional golfers during the competitive rounds of the 2015 Farmers Insurance Open. Birdies for Charity maximizes donations received with a bonus prize that is shared among the participating nonprofits.

To help Junior Achievement inspire the next generation of San Diego leaders, we invite you to donate through this unique initiative and maximize your donation today at:

"The Farmers Insurance Open is about much more than golf.  It's about giving back to the community," said Tony DeSantis, president of personal lines for Farmers. "We wanted to be sure to recognize local charities for the positive impact they are having on the youth of San Diego."

Junior Achievement empowers young people, through a variety of programs to include in- classroom curriculum targeting low-to-middle income families and experiences, such as, the McGrath Family JA BizTown for 5th graders that connects classroom learning to the real world.

This year, 18% of San Diego students will not complete high school on time and earn a diploma. That is why in 2015, JA’s high school programs will expand with the launch of Mission Fed JA Finance Park, a reality-based learning program that inspires high school students, families and community partners to plan for their future and embrace financial responsibility.  Last, the JA Company Program unlocks the entrepreneurship spirit of teens to launch a business venture from the ground-up through local and national competitive events.

“Junior Achievement of San Diego is thrilled to be part of the Birdies for Charity initiative,” said Joanne Pastula, President and CEO at Junior Achievement of San Diego County. “San Diego’s success lies in the cultivation of our young people and the funds generated through this unique program will help us reach more youth in San Diego and ensure that they are prepared to succeed in the workforce and in higher education.”
