San Diego Humane Society and The Super Dentists Find a New Home at the McGrath Family JA BizTown
April 28, 2015
SAN DIEGO, CA -- The McGrath Family JA BizTown, a 10,000 square foot mini-city where kids discover how free enterprise works, located at Junior Achievement of San Diego County in Mission Valley, is excited to announce two new shops are joining the thriving metropolis -- The Super Dentists (TSD) and San Diego Humane Society. Dental check-ups and finding new parents for furry friends are now a part of the JA BizTown experience for thousands of fifth grade students in San Diego.
“We are thrilled to have San Diego Humane Society and The Super Dentists on board. They share our passion to inspire every child to dream for a bigger and brighter future by teaching our children “real-world” lessons about financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work-readiness skills,” said Joanne Pastula, President and CEO at Junior Achievement of San Diego County.
Prior to attending JA BizTown, students are exposed to four weeks of curriculum in the classroom on how to be a citizen, how a city’s economy works, how to apply for a job and how to run a successful business. They then put their knowledge into practice by visiting JA BizTown, located at the Capdevilla Gillespie Center for Junior Achievement in San Diego. Each student works a job at one of 21 life-sized San Diego businesses. The students also earn paychecks, open bank accounts, pay taxes, vote, and much more.

Finding new loving homes for furry friends, keeping animals healthy and recruiting new pet owners are just a few of the “career perks” at the new San Diego Humane Society shop in JA BizTown. The students wear “many hats” including veterinarian, adoption counselor and educator. They will make sure that the animals are healthy; cages are clean; and provide educational tours to 150 JA BizTown citizens each day at the new shop.
“We have the opportunity to reach thousands of students, maybe some who have no experience with animals, and teach them the importance of treating animals as valued members of our families while preventing cruelty and neglect in our San Diego community for years to come, ” said Dr. Gary Weitzman, president and CEO of San Diego Humane Society.
The Super Dentists
The Super Dentists shop will be armed with a team of students. They will serve as “cavity fighters” in the roles of a super pediatric dentist, super orthodontist, activity coordinator, super kid and CEO/CFO. Some of the important job responsibilities include free “dental checkups” and watching a helpful video that teaches how to properly brush one’s teeth.
“When we are able to introduce young people to free market economics, engage them in hands-on, relevant ways, and positively impact their values and attitudes, we are contributing to making not only San Diego, but our nation, a better place,” said Dr. Kami Hoss, CEO of The Super Dentists. “We look forward to many years of inspiring tomorrow’s entrepreneur right here in our own backyard.”
The Need for JA
April is national Financial Literacy Month. This comes at a time when California received a failing grade in teaching students about financial literacy. According to Center for Financial Literacy, a Vermont-based nonprofit, California is one of 11 states that have few requirements or none at all, for personal finance education in high school. To get to receive an “A”, states must require either a standalone personal finance course or require that personal finance topics be taught as part of another mandatory course. States that received an “A” were Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Missouri, Tennessee, Utah and Virginia.
Providing young people with real-world learning experiences can be key to improving U.S. high school graduation rates. Currently, one in five students do not graduate with their class on time.
