San Diego Students to Compete at Junior Achievement’s Business Competition on May 3
April 17, 2014
On Saturday, May 3, 22 student companies will present their products and services at Junior Achievement of San Diego County’s The Next Big Thing: Entrepreneurs Showcase presented by Cymer, Inc. at Liberty Station Conference Center.
Junior Achievement Company Program lets students start and manage their own businesses. By organizing and operating an actual business enterprise, students not only experience how business functions, they also learn financial responsibility and workforce readiness skills. Under the guidance of a business volunteer, students decide on a product or service, market it to their classmates, family and neighbors, and carry the responsibility of managing company finances.
All part of JA Company Program, the students will come together from Abraxas Continuation, High Tech, Hilltop, Junipero Serra, La Jolla Country Day, Monte Vista, Patrick Henry, Pacific Ridge, Westview High Schools and Harmonium Afterschool Program. The companies will present their business plans, pitch their products and compete to be named The Student Company of the Year.
Some of the products and services include a/an:
- Environmentally conscious desk organizer
- Detachable collar for private school attendees
- Organization supporting young entrepreneurs and software experts
- Colored and scented surf wax
- T-shirts, tank tops and crewnecks with customized pocket designs
- Social media company
- Booking agency for food trucks for local events
At the event, a panel of judges will review companies’ business plans and decide on top three winners who will get a chance to compete at the North American competition in Washington D.C. this summer. The students will also be judged on ingenuity, marketing and finances.
The event will be held at Liberty Station Conference Center at 2600 Laning Road and is open to the public from 1 p.m. – 3 p.m. Tradeshow showcase is from 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. Awards are from 2:30 p.m. – 3 p.m.
