UTC Aerospace Systems Volunteers Bring a Dose of the “Real World” to Fifth- Graders as a part of The McGrath Family JA BizTown Experience

February 25, 2015

San Diego, California --Employees from UTC Aerospace Systems, one of the world’s largest suppliers of technologically advanced aerospace and defense products, are inspiring the next generation of business leaders in San Diego by volunteering at The McGrath Family JA BizTown on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m at Capdevilla Gillespie Center for Junior Achievement, located at 4756 Mission Gorge Place, San Diego.

The aeaerospace professional will take a break from their day jobs to assist more than 100 fifth grade students from Otay and Elevate Elementary as they take on adult roles and become “JA Biztown citizens” for the day.  Each student receives a job for the day, earns two paychecks, opens a banking account, manages a debit card, and pays taxes, votes and much more.

The volunteers will work alongside the students in one of the 21 life-sized San Diego businesses in the thriving 10,000 square-foot mini-city. The time spent at JA BizTown is only one day, but the impact will last a lifetime.

“We are thrilled to work with the students as they take on the world of grown-up responsibilities for the day,” said Kyrsten Johnson, senior program finance analyst at UTC Aerospace Systems – Aerostructures in Chula Vista.  “It is important to help our students achieve their dream outside of the classroom by giving them meaningful workplace experiences.”

“Every one of the 15,000 students we serve annual with the JA BizTown program have the opportunity to feel personal satisfaction after spending the day working hard at their jobs,” said Katie Easton, education manager at Junior Achievement of San Diego County, who oversees the daily operations of McGrath Family JA BizTown.  “The students leave with a greater understanding of the value of a dollar, the importance of teamwork, and how to be a contributing citizen in the community.”

Media is invited to interview the business volunteers and witness first-hand what the JA BizTown experience is all about on Wednesday, Feb. 25 from 9 a.m. – 1 p.m at Capdevilla Gillespie Center for Junior Achievement, located at 4756 Mission Gorge Place, San Diego.  For more information: jasandiego.org
